Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. — 1 Timothy 6:12
What Paul does is exhort Timothy to hold onto something important. To fight and take hold of the victory, which is eternal life. And here is why. Eternal life is the victory gained by Jesus. Jesus fought and won the fight against sin and death, and his victory provided us with salvation. But Timothy is called to fight another fight. The battle of faith. But the great part of this fight is that he can fight like a winner because the fight against sin and death has been won. Jesus won and gained the prize. All Timothy needs to do is take hold of the trophy and live in the victory as he fights for faith.
But, doing this is not engaging in the power of positive thinking. The power of positive thinking attempts to wish away present realities by inserting the ones we want but don't have. Sin is a reality that cannot be wished away. Sin is a reality that must be washed away. And the good news is Jesus addressed sin and defeated it. Because of this truth and reality, we enjoy the victory — his salvation. In faith, we believe that his resurrection was an actual event that overcame sin that separated us from God. This is not the power of positive thinking. This is believing a fact by faith and taking hold of his victory. And in our confession of Jesus as Lord, we receive this amazing gift.
But here is the deal. I think many believers don't consistently take hold of Jesus's victory. Maybe because we are too busy taking hold of the fears we have. Or gripping too tightly to the sin of our past. Or hanging onto the regrets we have about what we should have done. Or holding onto the shame projected on us by others.
So today, I want you to return to the moment you first confessed Jesus as Lord. Remember how tightly you took hold of Jesus's victory over your sins. And then let go of all the rest. Let go of fear. Sin. Regret. Shame. And grab onto his victory. This is living in eternal life now. It's the reality we enjoy. It's not the power of positive thinking. It's the truth, and you, the great man of faith, get to enjoy this victory.
Let it go. And take hold.
ASK THIS: Is there something you need to let go of today?
DO THIS: Let it go. Take hold of his victory.
PRAY THIS: God, I need to see your victory fresh today. Show me the cross and your victory again.
PLAY THIS: My Victory.
