He argues that most Christians default to familiar passages like Genesis 3, Job, or Daniel 10 when thinking about spiritual warfare, especially the idea of supernatural “princes” over nations in Daniel, yet they rarely ask where these ideas originate, assuming they appear late in Scripture when in fact they are rooted much earlier. Heiser challenges the common Christian explanation that the world’s evil stems solely from the fall in Eden, explaining that Second Temple Jewish thought instead identified three distinct rebellions: first, the divine and human rebellion in Genesis 3 involving a supernatural being (not merely a literal snake but a divine rebel figure connected conceptually to texts like Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28); second, the घटना in Genesis 6:1–4 where “sons of God” transgress boundaries, corrupt humanity, and disseminate forbidden knowledge such as warfare, idolatry, and occult practices—an event echoed in Jewish literature and linked by Peter and Jude to imprisoned angels; and third, the rebellion at Babel in Genesis 11, which, though seemingly lacking supernatural elements in the narrative itself, is interpreted through Deuteronomy 32:8–9 (especially in the Dead Sea Scrolls reading) as the moment when God judged humanity by dividing the nations and allotting them to lesser divine beings (“sons of God”), effectively disinheriting them while choosing Israel as His own portion.
