In the prophets, Edom stands for the hostile powers around Israel, especially because of its role in Jerusalem’s destruction and Babylon’s conquest, so its punishment is cast as part of the larger moment when exile ends and the kingdom of God begins to be renewed on earth. In Obadiah 18, the houses of Jacob and Joseph symbolize the reunited people of God—both southern and northern Israel—and Edom is pictured as stubble consumed by fire, which signals that the full restoration of the twelve tribes depends on judgment against Edom. The final verse, Obadiah 21, is especially important because it speaks of “saviors” going up to Mount Zion to judge Mount Esau and concludes that “the kingship will belong to Yahweh,” language that the speaker connects to the broader biblical pattern of deliverance, divine rule, and the reconstitution of God’s kingdom. He argues that the Septuagint’s wording and the New Testament’s use of similar themes show how Obadiah’s language can be abstracted beyond literal military defeat, so that Edom comes to represent all the nations and the restoration of Zion becomes tied to salvation in Christ, not just political victory. That is why Acts 15 and James’s use of Amos 9 are so significant: James reads the rebuilding of David’s tent and the possession of Edom as fulfilled in the inclusion of the Gentiles, showing that “Edom” can function as a theological category for everyone outside Israel who is now brought into God’s family. The transcript then broadens this into an “already but not yet” framework, where judgment language is already fulfilled in the cross and Pentecost as the gospel goes to the nations, but also awaits final completion at Christ’s return, when Old Testament judgment imagery reappears in texts like Isaiah 63 and Revelation 19 to describe the final defeat of God’s enemies.
