Why Did God Have to Become a Man? – Michael Heiser (Rare Clip)
John 14:6

From the very beginning of creation, the biblical picture is that God does not merely want a purely spiritual “family” in the heavenly realm—made up of pre‑existing divine beings or “sons of God”—but also desires a human family on earth, modeled in Eden as the place where heaven and earth meet and where God’s throne room, council, and entourage include humanity alongside spiritual beings, forming a “blended family” of divine and human representatives who jointly image and represent God’s rule in their respective domains. When Eden collapses because of human and spiritual rebellion, the rest of the biblical narrative becomes God’s project to restore that Edenic vision, not discard it; he refuses to wipe his hands of creation and instead works through covenant after covenant—Adamic, post‑flood, Abrahamic, Davidic, Mosaic—knowing humans will fail, yet committed to ensuring that the covenants are fulfilled by becoming one of them in the Incarnation, so that a true human, Jesus, can both keep the terms of every covenant and offer himself as a ransom to deal with the death and rebellion introduced in Genesis 3. This restoration unfolds in cosmic geographic terms: after humanity’s rejection at Babel and God’s subsequent division of the nations among lesser gods, he starts over with Abraham and Israel, setting up a long‑running conflict between Yahweh and other divine powers, so that the presence or absence of God marks the boundaries of his dominion and of enslavement under rival spiritual rulers. The church, then, is called to expand God’s presence and kingdom by releasing people from bondage to these powers, an advance that begins with Jesus’ resurrection and anticipates the full, eschatological restoration described in Revelation 21 and parallel passages, where a new heaven and a new earth return the world to an Eden‑like state on a global scale, bringing humanity—now sharing in a divine nature and exercising worldwide rulership—to reign with God forever in a renewed creation.
