The Severe Judgment Oracle Against Edom—and Why You Missed It | Michael Heiser | Part 1

Part 2: https://youtu.be/Jqp3ZqHAsZg Obadiah is much more than a brief oracle against Edom. It is a densely theological book about Israel, the nations, exile, restoration, and the day of the Lord. Edom, the land south of the Dead Sea associated with Esau, becomes in the prophetic imagination a representative of hostile powers, especially Babylon, because of its long-standing hostility toward Israel, its refusal to let Israel pass through its territory, its later conflict with Davidic Judah, and its participation in Jerusalem’s downfall. Obadiah announces judgment on Edom as a form of measured repayment for what it did to Judah. The book’s language is deliberately loaded with echoes from elsewhere in Scripture, especially Isaiah 14, where pride, exaltation, stars, and being brought down to the ground are used to describe a rebel figure; Obadiah applies similar language to Edom to portray it as arrogantly self-exalting yet destined for divine humiliation. In that way, Edom is not treated merely as a political enemy, but as a theological enemy that participates in the larger biblical pattern of rebellion and judgment. Obadiah also links Edom’s downfall to the end of exile and the restoration of God’s people: Judah has already drunk the cup of wrath, and now the nations will drink it too. That places the book within an “already but not yet” framework in which God’s authority over the nations is vindicated and Zion’s restoration moves toward completion. In the closing verses, the contrast between Jacob and Esau becomes decisive, the land is reclaimed, and deliverers arise on Mount Zion, which has clear significance for New Testament interpretation, especially in light of Acts 15’s use of Amos 9.
