Drunkenness, Sorcery, and the Misery of Losing Control | Michael Heiser

Michael Heiser argues that the Bible does not teach teetotalism as a universal command; moderate alcohol consumption is permitted, but drunkenness is clearly condemned, and the real issue for substances (including cannabis) is wisdom and self-control rather than a blanket prohibition. He notes that Proverbs 23:31 is often cited by abstinence advocates, but in his view the passage targets the allure of intoxication and the path to drunkenness, not every sip of wine, and that modern fermentation technology makes today’s alcohol far stronger than in antiquity—so much of what we drink would fall under the biblical “strong drink” warnings rather than ordinary wine. For defining the line, Heiser points to 1 Corinthians 6:12 (“All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful… I will not be dominated by anything”) as a practical boundary: if your faculties, judgment, or self-control are impaired—if you’re “buzzed” enough that vision, thinking, or behavior are affected—you’ve crossed into the territory Paul warns against. On drugs, he highlights the ancient association between psychoactive substances and divination/sorcery: terms like the Hebrew kassaf (“sorcerer,” linked to herbal potions) and ḥābar (“charmer,” linked to tying charms) and the Greek pharmakeia (Galatians 5:20) carry negative connotations because they were used in contexts of seeking spiritual contact, omens, or altered states, not because every use of plants or medicine is sinful. Drawing from his own background in an alcoholic home and exposure to addiction through his father’s ministry to recovering individuals, Heiser personally abstains from alcohol and expresses deep skepticism about recreational drug use, but he refuses to universalize his preference into doctrine; instead, he frames the question as wisdom: given the risks of impairment, dependence, and the biblical warnings about being mastered by anything, why would a wise person experiment with substances that compromise self-control or invite spiritual confusion?
