You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here. — John 14:28-31 Believers should always have a somewhat shocking response to situations. That's because they look at troubling situations believing in the promises of Jesus. By hearing and believing in them and in Jesus, they will see a spiritual reality that others don't. So today, instead of looking at your present troubling situation with despair, take another look. Look at the same situation through the promises of Jesus. Find a teaching of Jesus that speaks to your situation and anchor yourself in the promise of that text. If you do, you might hear Jesus say something like he did to these troubled followers here. You might hear him say: "Don't worry, I've got this. This situation does not have you; I've got it. And because I've got it; I've got you. The trouble it appears to produce will produce something better in you and for you. So see your situation my way, not the world's way. So rejoice with me." And church, when you see it that way, your response will be different — you will rejoice. And often the world will be confused because it cannot see what you see. ASK THIS: When you face a troubling situation, how do you usually respond? Have you ever tried looking at it through the promises of Jesus, believing that he's got control over it? How might that change your perspective? Think about the last time you felt overwhelmed or in despair. How might your reaction have been different if you truly believed that Jesus was saying to you, "Don't worry, I've got this"? What steps can you take to embrace this assurance in your daily life? DO THIS: Look again at your trouble and believe Jesus has it. PRAY THIS: Lord, help me to see my troubling situations through your promises, trusting that you've got control over them. Strengthen my faith, so I may rejoice in trials, knowing that you've got me and that every challenge will produce something better in me and for me. Amen. PLAY THIS: He Is.
