Why Heaven Has No Sea

The Bible opens on dark water and closes with the sea abolished forever. A forensic study of the one thread that runs from Genesis to Revelation: the chaos-sea God conquers, and the living water He gives. Most readers treat every water in the Bible as one symbol. The text resists that reading. Beneath the English, Scripture keeps two different waters apart: the threatening sea (Hebrew tehom and yam, Greek thalassa) and the living water (Hebrew mayim hayyim, Greek hudor zon). This investigation follows that thread through eight scenes: the Spirit hovering over the deep, the Flood, the Red Sea, the struck rock in the wilderness, the Jordan crossed by two men who share one name, the well at Sychar, the wound in the side of Christ, and the river of life. Along the way one detail keeps returning: the same water that drowns also saves, and every crossing of water is a passage through death into new life. And it ends with an anomaly hidden in plain sight. In Revelation 21:1, before death, before mourning, the first thing the new creation leaves behind is the sea.
