Why Did the Disciples Mistake Jesus for a Ghost? | Michael Heiser

Michael Heiser explains that two familiar Gospel episodes—Jesus walking on water (Mark 6:49–50) where the disciples mistake him for a ghost, and his post-resurrection appearances to the disciples—should be read against the backdrop of abundant Greco-Roman ghost stories and postmortem apparition narratives, which scholars have organized into literary genres with expected stock elements that readers would recognize. Heiser argues that New Testament writers both utilized and subverted these genres: they conform to traditional ghost/appearing-dead elements (nighttime setting, fear, physical details like Jesus eating by the seaside or Thomas touching his wounds) while simultaneously recasting or combining them in bizarre, excessive ways that signal the stock models are inadequate for describing Jesus. Drawing on Jason Robert Combs’s 2008 Journal of Biblical Literature article “A Ghost on the Water?”, Heiser highlights that Mark deliberately includes classic ghost-story themes (night, wind, dim light) but then subverts the genre by having Jesus walk on water—the one thing ghosts in Greco-Roman literature absolutely cannot do, whereas divine men and gods routinely walk on water—so that literate readers would recognize Jesus as a divine figure while the disciples remain spiritually clueless, insisting on believing the absurd because their hearts were hardened (Mark 6:51–52), a recurring Markan theme of disciples’ failure to understand. Shifting to resurrection accounts, Heiser cites Deborah Thompson Prince’s 2007 Journal for the Study of the New Testament article “The ‘Ghost’ of Jesus: Luke 24 in Light of Ancient Narratives of Postmortem Apparitions,” which argues that Luke 24 deliberately disorients readers by incorporating all known models of postmortem appearances simultaneously, thereby displaying the breadth and magnitude of Jesus’s resurrected presence while highlighting the limitations of each model; Luke uses the vocabulary and literary models available to him but shows they are insufficient, telegraphing that the resurrection experience surpasses every traditional category. Heiser concludes that the New Testament is not unique in the sense of ignoring ancient genres—writers worked within them—but the subversion and combination of elements reveal that Jesus’s identity and resurrection are beyond what any existing ghost or apparition story could adequately capture, encouraging readers to understand the Bible in its own ancient literary and cultural context rather than claiming absolute uniqueness or dismissing the parallels.
