Why would communists and Islamists ever join forces? Iran in 1979 gives us a fascinating example. Leftists, Marxists, student radicals, and Islamists opposed the Shah for very different reasons. They didn't share the same worldview or even the same vision for Iran's future. But for a time, they shared something powerful enough to bring them together: A common opponent. Scripture shows us a similar pattern. Luke 23:12 tells us that Herod and Pilate, previously enemies, became friends on the very day Jesus stood before them. Their differences didn't disappear. Their opposition gave them temporary common cause.
