What happens when the mountain top meets the valley floor?
Summary
In Mark 9, Jesus’s glory is unveiled in the transfiguration, yet immediately He plunges His disciples into the messy reality of a demon-tormented boy and the mystery of His impending death (Mark 9:1–32). This chapter shows us that mountaintop encounters are meant to fuel our grit in the valleys—calling us to desperate faith, humble service, and ruthless holiness (Mark 9:33–50). As we wrestle with confusion, pride, and sin, Jesus invites us to listen more, believe more fiercely, and cut anything from our lives that hinders eternal life.
Reflection & Small Group Discussion Questions
1. What stands out to you most about the Transfiguration (Mark 9:1–13), and how does it challenge your view of Jesus?
2. The disciples wanted to “build tents” on the mountain. What are your “tents” – comforts or distractions – that keep you from simply listening to Jesus?
3. In the valley, the father cries, “I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24). When have you experienced faith and doubt side by side?
4. Why do you think the disciples failed to cast out the demon (Mark 9:14–29), and what does that teach us about spiritual authority today?
5. Jesus predicts His death a second time (Mark 9:30–32). How does knowing the cost of following Him impact your willingness to serve?
6. The argument over greatness (Mark 9:33–37) reveals hidden ambition. How do you measure success in God’s kingdom?
7. Jesus says, “If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off” (Mark 9:43). What practical steps can you take to remove stumbling blocks in your life?
8. “Better to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell” (Mark 9:45). How seriously do you take the reality of eternal judgment?
9. In what ways is God calling you to a “servant-heart” this week, based on Jesus’s teaching about welcoming children (Mark 9:36–37)?
10. How can your small group encourage one another to pursue deeper obedience, sacrifice, and holiness in light of this chapter?
