🔥 Is the PCA Considering Ordaining Women as Deacons? A Biblical Response to Overture 37
In this video, I will explain the overture written by Pacific Presbytery to be considered at the 2026 General Assembly of the PCA. Here, our brothers unwisely and hastily propose a change to begin ordaining female deacons in the PCA. I do not believe that this overture has much chance to pass, but it does mark a watershed moment in which an entire presbytery proposes a liberalizing change to our understanding of ordination and office. I will comb through their overture, exposing its obvious weaknesses, especially as I give a more accurate exegesis of Romans 16:1, Acts 6, and 1 Timothy 3. The 53rd PCA General Assembly will consider Overture 37, a proposal to amend the Book of Church Order (BCO 9-3) to allow women to serve as ordained deacons.
In this video, I explain why I am deeply concerned — and yes, legitimately embarrassed — that this overture was even submitted.
But don’t panic.
The PCA is not about to become the PCUSA overnight. In fact, I explain why changing the Book of Church Order is extremely difficult. However, this proposal raises serious theological questions about:
- Romans 16:1 and Phoebe
- 1 Timothy 3 and the qualifications for deacons
- Acts 6 and the origin of the diaconate
- The difference between descriptive vs. prescriptive texts
-- Westminster Confession 1.9 and interpreting Scripture with Scripture
- The authority of Christ over His church
Most importantly:
Will our church government be shaped by Scripture — or by cultural pressure?
This video walks carefully through the biblical texts, challenges weak argumentation, and calls the PCA to remain a conservative, Bible-believing, confessionally Reformed denomination.
