Proto-Gospel. First Prophecy of Christ. Genesis 3:14-16. [Sermon].

What is the first prophecy of Jesus Christ in the Bible? In Genesis 3:14–16, immediately after the Fall, God announces both judgment and the first Gospel promise—the protoevangelium (proto-Gospel). In this sermon, we explore the judgment of the serpent and the woman, the promise of the coming Messiah, and the dramatic prophecy that the serpent would bruise the Messiah’s heel while the Messiah would crush the serpent’s head. Genesis 3:15 points forward to Christ’s suffering, death, resurrection, and ultimate victory over Satan. We also consider the biblical meaning of the curse on the serpent, the consequences of sin, humility versus humiliation, the difficulties introduced into marriage by the Fall, and the remarkable mercy of God even in the midst of judgment. Most importantly, we see how Jesus Christ—the true Messiah and invincible Warrior—fulfills the promise of Genesis 3.
