Evangelist in The Pilgrim’s Progress: A Character Analysis Who is Evangelist in John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress? Why does this seemingly mysterious character appear at some of the most important moments in Christian’s journey? In this video, we take a closer look at Evangelist, one of the most important—and often overlooked—figures in The Pilgrim’s Progress. Evangelist repeatedly appears when Christian is in danger, confused, tempted, or facing a moment of spiritual crisis. He warns, rebukes, encourages, and points Christian back to the right path. We will examine three major scenes involving Evangelist: The City of Destruction — Evangelist warns Christian to “flee wrath to come,” gives him the scroll, and points him toward the Wicket Gate. Mount Sinai — After Christian is deceived by Mr. Worldly Wiseman and turns toward Legality, Evangelist rebukes him and redirects him away from legalism and self-righteousness. Vanity Fair — Evangelist warns Christian and Faithful about persecution, suffering, and the dangers of the world, the flesh, and the Devil. Along the way, we will consider Evangelist's piercing questions, his warnings about death, judgment, and hell, his rebuke of worldly wisdom, and his call to persevere faithfully to the end. Perhaps most importantly, Evangelist functions throughout Bunyan’s story much like a pastor or missionary: he warns, guides, and directs Christian, but he cannot walk Christian’s journey for him. He appears at moments of crisis and urgency, reminding us that the Christian life requires perseverance, vigilance, and steadfast faith.
