Covered by Grace | Genesis 3:20–21 | The Gospel in the Garden of Eden What does clothing have to do with the gospel? In Genesis 3:20–21, immediately after Adam and Eve’s fall into sin, we encounter two remarkable signs of God’s grace. Eve is named “the mother of all living,” and God Himself makes garments of skins and clothes Adam and Eve. In the midst of judgment, God displays mercy. In this sermon, we explore the profound biblical theology of clothing, nakedness, shame, substitution, and righteousness. Adam and Eve tried to cover themselves with fig leaves, but their own efforts could never adequately cover their sin and shame. Instead, God provides a covering—and that covering comes through the death of another. This points forward to the great doctrine of imputed righteousness: sinners cannot stand before a holy God on the basis of their own righteousness. We need the righteousness of another—the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ, received by grace through faith. We will consider: • Genesis 3:20–21 and the surprising grace of God after the Fall • Why Adam and Eve needed to be clothed • The theological significance of the garments of skin • Penalty substitution and the principle of one dying for another • The difference between inherent righteousness and imputed righteousness • Justification by grace through faith alone • The biblical theme of clothing and nakedness throughout Scripture • Zechariah 3 and Joshua’s filthy garments • The wedding garment in Matthew 22 • Why Jesus condemned the religious “clothing” of the Pharisees • Why our good works cannot cover our sin • How Christ becomes our perfect covering and righteousness The message of Genesis 3:20–21 ultimately points us beyond Adam and Eve to Jesus Christ, the spotless Lamb of God, who died for sinners so that those who trust in Him might be clothed in His righteousness. We do not need to manufacture our own covering.
