Why Rock Bottom Doesn’t Always Change You

Have you ever hit rock bottom—and still returned to the same sin?
Maybe your marriage almost ended. Your addiction was exposed. You lost something important. You cried, apologized, and promised you’d change.
But nothing really changed.
That’s because being broken isn’t the same as being repentant.
Peter and Judas both betrayed Jesus. Both experienced deep sorrow. But their sorrow moved them in opposite directions. Judas moved away from Jesus. Peter eventually returned to Him.
Second Corinthians 7:10 explains why:
“Godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.”
Worldly grief hates the consequences of sin. Godly grief hates the sin itself. One asks for relief. The other turns back to God.
In this Brief, Vince Miller explains why pain alone cannot transform us, what biblical repentance actually looks like, and how James 4:6–10 calls us to submit, resist, draw near, cleanse, and humble ourselves before God.
Don’t waste your breaking. Let it drive you toward Christ—not away from Him.
