Pay Attention To Divine Moments | Devotional | Luke 2:1-6

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. — Luke 2:1-6 So Mary and Joseph made a pretty grueling trip in the final month of pregnancy. They traveled 90 miles south across some rather rugged terrain to get back to his hometown for a government-mandated census. Nonetheless, they make it. And exhausted, they must now find a place to stay. I am not sure how you might imagine the following moments, but Joseph and Mary were most likely taken in by the hospitality of people that Joseph knew. They may have stayed in a home that would have looked like the one you'll see on the video today. This typified a small Israelite home with living quarters on the second floor and a cooking area, storage, and an animal stable on the first floor. Was this a humble situation for a traveling couple? Yes. But was this common in their time? Was it common for travelers to stay in a guest's home after a long trip? Yes, especially in times of celebration or when cities were crowded during this census. But still, this is not the entrance you would expect for a King. I am sure this is not exactly what Mary would have expected. Remember she gave birth to the King of all Glory in an ass stable, in a stranger's home, and then laid him a feeding trough. So why did God allow Jesus to enter life this way? I believe God likes to do things that are counter to our human expectations so he can draw more attention to his divine purpose. Simply put, he wants us to pay attention to something only he would be able to do. Today pay more attention to those small divine moments God presents to you. And then when you see that humble moment take a few seconds and wonder at its mystery. And then praise God. ASK THIS: What humble moment have you seen as of late? DO THIS: Praise God for what he did.
