Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” — Matthew 2:13
Across our country, today, people are moving. They are fleeing from one state to find refuge in another. They are seeking safety, sanity, and security. It’s the great migration of our time.
And this is what Joseph was looking for too. But in his case, the life of his child was threatened, and he was running for his life. So, the Lord directed him to take his wife and newborn child and run. To seek refuge outside the reach of the influence and rage of King Herod. Thus, this small family — Joseph, Mary, and Jesus became refugees.
All this begins with a willing man, husband, father, and leader. A man who was prompted to protect his family, pack their bags, and provide them safety. Then, as he is going, (notice that — “when they had departed”), he receives a confirmation and providential word from the Lord. Joseph, a quiet and unknown man, would become the temporary protector of the one who would provide protection for all mankind. And I bet this was all a little scary and unnerving for them.
But 30 years later, this child whom Joseph protected would protect him. Jesus would become the protector and provision of his faith. His leadership had no boundaries. His salvation was for all people. And he died so that all might know God, even those who were refugees and his enemies.
So today, if you feel lost and are looking for refuge, you need to know that you are not alone. Jesus’s parents felt just like you. They, too, were strangers in a foreign land living in an oppressive and confusing time. They were believers just like you, seeking refuge. But ironically, they were saved by the refugee who they risked their lives to save.
ASK THIS: Are you lost and looking for refuge?
DO THIS: Seek refuge in the Divine Refugee.
PRAY THIS: God, I may feel lost, but I know today I am never alone.
PLAY THIS: I Am Not Alone.
