Commit To Resist Your Temptation | John 13:26-30

Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. Some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night. — John 13:26-30 John writes about this moment in a way that tells us what was happening at that moment was very cryptic to the ten men in the room. However, two men, Jesus and Judas, were keenly aware of what was going on. If we focus on these two men, we see one who remained composed in the face of betrayal by a long-time friend and follower, and another who was seized by selfish intent to the point that his actions would set in motion events leading to the crucifixion. While I am inclined to judge Judas for his response in that moment, I must also acknowledge my own moments where sin and selfishness have taken hold of me. I have broken promises, shared confidential information, and engaged in dishonest behavior that undermines the trust others have placed in me. I have prioritized my own desires, ambitions, or material possessions over the well-being and interests of others. I have succumbed to greed, envy, and other vices, making choices that go against our biblical values. Moreover, I have failed to take responsibility for my desires and actions, following a path of increasing sin. The truth is, when I act in this manner, I hurt those closest to me—my wife, children, friends, and colleagues. But more significantly, it is a spiritual offense against Jesus, who extends to me a piece of His body in the form of grace. I recognize that you, too, have experienced such moments. We all have. Today, let us make the decision to resist the temptations of Judas. Let us fight against the satanic impulses that drive us to act on selfish desires. Instead, may we act on righteous spiritual convictions and reject unrighteous fleshly gains. Let us resist the temptations that lead us astray into deeper and darker sins, choosing the path of holiness. As believers, let us commit ourselves to being faithful, loyal, and selfless to Jesus, who exemplified faithfulness, loyalty, and selflessness in the face of unrighteousness and sin.
