The Sacred Platform of God’s Word | Nehemiah 8:4-8

And Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform that they had made for the purpose. And beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah on his right hand, and Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam on his left hand. And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people, and as he opened it all the people stood. And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground. Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, the Levites, helped the people to understand the Law, while the people remained in their places. Thanks for your support, and I pray this blesses you today. Today, I want you to capture the imagery of how this moment probably unfolded. Imagine a massive gathering of 42,000 people, a congregation that had not witnessed such an event since the onset of their Babylonian captivity. The anticipation and reverence in the air are palpable as they come together to hear God's Word. In the center of this gathering, a wooden stage stands tall, purposefully erected for this sacred occasion. On that platform, Ezra, a revered figure among the assembly, takes his place. He unrolls the Torah scroll before him, ready to impart its wisdom and guidance. Surrounding Ezra, a dedicated group of Levites and laymen play pivotal roles. They function as both the ancient equivalent of a modern-day sound system and translators. As Ezra begins to read a paragraph from the sacred text, their voices rise in unity. The Levites and laymen, strategically positioned around the platform, serve as the conduits of God's message to the vast congregation. With clarity and precision, they disperse the message in every direction, ensuring that every member of the assembly can hear and understand. This dynamic process continues as Ezra reads, and the Levites and laymen translate, disseminating the profound teachings of the Torah to a people whose connection to their ancient language had been diluted during years of captivity. But in all this detail, notice what is central — God and his Word. I am not a teacher who believes we should ever worship the Bible (i.e., bibliolatry), but I do believe we live in a time that does not take the Bible seriously enough. A lot of modern trends have contributed to this problem: the secularization of churches, cultural trends in education, pluralism and a misinterpretation of love in religion, family activities and busyness, and blatant pastoral misinterpretation of God's Word. These factors all contribute to biblical drift because, at some point, we thought we had a better way and word than God's Word. We don't need a better way and better word. We only need God's way, found in God's Word. And when we center around it, listen to it, and return to it, great things happen. And that's my dedication to you. I am going to be reading God's Word right here with you each day for the rest of my life, echoing the accuracy of God's way and his word, not mine.
