What if the fire isn’t proof that you missed God’s will but the moment your faith becomes visible—in 1 Peter 4, Peter shows how to stay faithful when following Jesus becomes costly.
Summary
Peter prepares believers for fiery trials by calling them to arm their minds with Christ’s resolve and give the rest of their lives to God’s will. He urges them to use their remaining time for clear-minded prayer, earnest love, openhearted hospitality, and faithful service. He also warns that not every consequence is persecution, so Christians must make sure their suffering comes from faithfulness rather than foolishness. When suffering does come because of Christ, believers need not be ashamed because the Spirit of glory rests upon them. The chapter closes with a steady command: entrust your soul to the faithful Creator and keep doing good.
Reflection and Small Group Discussion Questions
1. What expectations have you held about the relationship between obedience and suffering?
2. What does it practically mean to “arm yourself” with the same resolve Christ demonstrated?
3. When you consider “the rest of your life,” what desire, habit, or pursuit do you need to surrender more fully to God?
4. Has anxiety about the future begun replacing clear-minded prayer in your life? What would help you reverse that pattern?
5. Which command in 1 Peter 4:7–11 most challenges you right now: pray, love, welcome, or serve?
6. What spiritual gift, resource, experience, or opportunity might God be asking you to use for someone else?
7. How can a Christian determine whether opposition is coming from biblical faithfulness or an unbiblical attitude and delivery?
8. Have you ever called a consequence “persecution” when God may have been correcting your behavior? What did you learn?
9. What outcome, reputation, relationship, or unresolved wrong are you currently trying to control?
10. What is one specific act of good you will continue doing this week while entrusting the outcome to the faithful Creator?
