What does baptism actually mean in the Bible? Is baptism always about water, or does Scripture use the word “baptism” in different ways?
In Episode 1 of the Baptism Explained series, we examine the biblical meaning of baptism and why understanding the context of each baptism passage is essential.
When many Christians hear the word “baptism,” they immediately think of water baptism. And water baptism is clearly important in Scripture. Jesus commanded His disciples to baptize in Matthew 28:19, and throughout the book of Acts, believers were baptized after hearing and believing the gospel.
But the Bible also speaks about baptism in ways that raise important questions.
John the Baptist baptized with water, but said Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit (Mark 1:8).
Paul says Israel was “baptized into Moses” (1 Corinthians 10:2).
Believers are “baptized into Christ Jesus” and “into his death” (Romans 6:3).
Paul also says believers were baptized “into one body” (1 Corinthians 12:13).
And Jesus even described His coming suffering as a “baptism” (Luke 12:50).
So does every reference to baptism mean the same thing?
In this Bible study, we’ll explore:
• What the word baptism means in Scripture
• Why context matters when interpreting baptism
• Water baptism and its biblical significance
• John’s baptism compared with Jesus’ baptism
