What was John’s baptism really for—and was John the Baptist’s baptism the same as Christian baptism?
In this episode of Baptism Explained, we examine what the Bible actually teaches about John’s baptism, the baptism of repentance, and why John baptized people in the Jordan River before the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
John the Baptist came preaching, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 3:2). His ministry was preparing Israel for the coming Messiah. His baptism was connected with repentance, confession of sin, and a genuine turning toward God.
But John’s baptism was never meant to point people to John.
It pointed them to Jesus Christ.
In this Bible study, you’ll discover:
• What John’s baptism really meant
• Why John the Baptist baptized people
• What “baptism of repentance” means
• Whether John’s baptism forgave sins
• Why repentance had to produce genuine fruit
• Why John said Someone greater was coming
• The difference between John’s baptism and Christian baptism
• Why Acts 19 is so important for understanding baptism
• How John’s ministry prepared the way for Jesus
• Why John’s baptism ultimately points us to Christ
Acts 19 gives us one of the clearest explanations of John’s baptism. Paul explained that John baptized with a baptism of repentance while telling people to believe in the One coming after him—Jesus.
John prepared the way.
Jesus fulfilled the promise.
And this leads to an even bigger question:
If John’s baptism was associated with repentance, why was Jesus baptized even though He had no sin to repent of?
That is where we’re going next in the Baptism Explained series.
