What does “Honor your father and your mother” actually mean in the Bible? In Exodus 20:12, the Hebrew word translated “honor” carries the idea of weight, importance, and significance—revealing that this command goes much deeper than simply obeying your parents.
In this Bible study, we examine the Hebrew meaning behind “Honor your father and your mother,” why God included this command in the Ten Commandments, and how Christians can apply it today.
Does honoring your parents always mean obeying them? What changes when you become an adult? Can you disagree with your parents and still honor them? What if your parents are difficult, controlling, or ask you to do something contrary to God’s Word?
We’ll explore Exodus 20:12, Ephesians 6:1–3, Genesis 2:24, Proverbs 23:22, Mark 7:9–13, 1 Timothy 5:4–8, Acts 5:29, Matthew 10:37, and other passages to see what Scripture actually teaches about honoring father and mother.
You’ll discover:
• The Hebrew meaning of “honor” in Exodus 20:12
• Why honor and obedience are connected—but not identical
• Whether adult children must obey their parents
• How your words can reveal honor or contempt
• Why caring for aging parents can be an expression of biblical honor
• How to honor your parents while establishing appropriate boundaries
• Why honoring your parents never means disobeying God
The biblical picture is powerful: to honor your parents is to give them their proper weight. Children normally express that honor through obedience, while adults may express it through respect, gratitude, listening, care, and refusing contempt—even when disagreement or boundaries are necessary.
But Scripture also establishes an important boundary: God comes first.
