Global Outreach, to the Glory of God

John MacArthur shared the following experience from his many ministry travels around the world in his Foreward to BIBLICAL MISSIONS: "I repeatedly saw the need for strong spiritual leadership. One experience cemented that reality in my mind. It took place in the 1980's, during a visit to Calcutta, India. One night a group of us attended a meeting of missionaries in the William Carey home in that city. A new missionary was also there who had recently arrived from a prominent evangelical seminary in the States. I was aware of the school, so I asked him in front of the group, 'What is your objective in coming to India?' Without hesitation he said, 'To liberate Indian women from male oppression.' Incredibly, he said nothing of the gospel, nor of service to the church. That was a definitive moment for me. At that time, the seminary he had attended was a leading missionary training school for evangelicals. But here was a recent graduate deployed to the field, devoid of the gospel in terms of his ministry objectives. I left that meeting alarmed and dismayed. Moreover, I was convinced that something far different had to happen if the church was to be faithful to fulfill the Great Commission. In spite of what some seminaries might teach, biblical missions is not driven by socioeconomic concerns, because its focus is not temporal but eternal. It is motivated by a love for the Lord Jesus, a passion for His Word, and a desire to see every soul bow in worship and submission to Him (Phil 2:9-11). True missionary work centers on the faithful proclamation of the gospel--the good news that sinners can be forgiven and reconciled to God through the person and work of Jesus Christ. Anything that distorts, dilutes, or distracts from the biblical message of salvation not only is not missions but is antithetical to the Great Commission."
