What Do You Mean by “The Church”

When someone says "Christians," who are they actually talking about? Catholic? Orthodox? Calvinist? Evangelical? The non-denominational church down the road? Those aren't the same thing — but a single vague label lets us pretend they are. This is one of the laziest habits in religious conversation: collapsing a thousand different traditions, eras, and beliefs into one big blur — "the church," "Christians" — and then arguing with the blur instead of the real thing. That vagueness isn't harmless. It gives one side an easier thing to attack and the other side an easier thing to hide behind. Both get to skip the harder work: saying what they actually mean. And when the language goes blurry, the thinking goes blurry right behind it. So before we defend Christianity, reject it, or try to fix it, we start somewhere simpler — by naming the thing.
