Is the PCA Really Schismatic? A Biblical Response to Redeemed Zoomer & Jordan Cooper
Is it ever biblical to leave a church or denomination? Or is every separation from an established church an act of sinful schism?
In this video, I respond to recent arguments by Redeemed Zoomer and Jordan Cooper regarding the doctrine of schism. Rather than beginning with historical theologians like Samuel Rutherford or Robert Baillie, I argue that we must first begin with Scripture itself. What does the New Testament actually teach about schism?
We examine every major New Testament use of the Greek word schisma and ask several important questions:
What is the biblical definition of schism?
Is doctrinal error ever a legitimate reason to separate from a church?
Does the Westminster Confession support Redeemed Zoomer's understanding?
Which branch is actually guilty of schism when a denomination abandons biblical truth?
Is the PCA a faithful continuation of historic American Presbyterianism—or is it the PCUSA?
What can we learn from 1 Corinthians, John's Gospel, 1 John, and Christ's High Priestly Prayer?
How should Christians pursue unity without compromising truth?
Along the way I discuss:
Redeemed Zoomer's recent statements on schism
Jordan Cooper's helpful contributions (and where I differ)
The Westminster Confession of Faith
Samuel Rutherford and Robert Baillie
The PCA, PCUSA, OPC, and NAPARC
Church discipline and the marks of the true church
Female ordination, doctrinal fidelity, and ecclesiastical renewal
Why true Christian unity must always be grounded in biblical truth
My conclusion may surprise you. While I strongly disagree with Redeemed Zoomer's definition of schism, I remain hopeful that God is raising up a faithful remnant within the PCUSA and that genuine Presbyterian unity may yet be possible through repentance and renewed commitment to the authority of Scripture.
