Miracles Happen Every Day | John 7:30-31

So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?” — John 7:30-31 This text tells us that John is surprised that Jesus was not apprehended after his message on the Temple Mount. They all believed that his life would be in danger if he went to Jerusalem for the Feast. Even Jesus anticipated it. Yet Jesus attended secretly. But on the fourth day, he did something his disciples and even his family did not expect. He begins teaching in the Temple Court. When he spoke, he was unlike anyone they had ever heard. His message was bold. His wisdom challenged leading religious teachers. His legal and oratory skills were beyond their understanding. And his supernatural authority commanded natural elements like food, water, and sickness. But now John adds one perplexing detail. No one laid a hand on him. This was a miracle in itself. But John sees the divine nature of this moment. By the command of God, Jesus could not be arrested. Instead, Jesus's preaching arrested them. They are apprehended by the God of the universe, who has them bound by his divine ordinance. And while they want a miracle, they don't see the miracle that just occurred because they only want miracles that serve them — not God. But John sees it. It's a miracle of non-indictment. I don't know about you, but I believe we experience miracles all the time. Miracles did not stop with the disciples in the first century. We have only stopped seeing them. This moment is proof. Like these people, we may say we want to see them. But we only want to see the miracles that serve us. What about all the miracles that serve God and his purposes? Do this today. Don't ask for more miracles that serve your purposes. Instead, ask God to show you his purposes, and then maybe you'll see more of the miracles he does every day. ASK THIS: Are you looking for your purposes or God's? DO THIS: Ask him to show you. PRAY THIS: God, help me see your purpose so I can see the miracle you are about to do. PLAY THIS: God of Purpose.
