In fact, He often uses the unexpected—flawed, fearful, even violent men—to bring about deliverance. Judges 3 introduces us to the first wave of deliverers in Israel’s dark cycle, reminding us that God’s mercy isn’t limited by our mess. Chapter Summary: Judges 3 launches the familiar cycle of sin, suffering, supplication, and salvation in Israel’s history. The chapter begins with God intentionally leaving surrounding nations in place to test Israel’s faith. Sadly, the people fail—intermarrying and embracing idolatry. In response, God raises up three deliverers: Othniel, the faithful; Ehud, the left-handed assassin; and Shamgar, the unexpected warrior. Through each one, God shows that He works through flawed men to bring about His merciful rescue. These imperfect heroes point to the perfect Deliverer to come—Jesus, who offers lasting freedom.
