As you delve into heart healing, I want to make you aware of two main wounds, the second of which can be harder to detect. The first involves wounds of hurt, things that directly happened to you; negative experiences which impacted your heart, whether you are aware of it in the moment or not. It does not matter how many times you yell, “I am bulletproof!” Negative experiences have an impact on your life to some degree. I’m not saying that everything that happens to you should send you running into an emotional emergency room. But I do want to encourage you to be aware that you have wounds that influence your thinking and behavior. These wounds may lead back to abusive experiences, hurtful words or slander against you. Betrayal is one of the most painful relational traumas people experience. Some of the great men of God in the Scriptures, including King David and Jesus Himself experienced the harsh pain of relational betrayal. Whenever you experience this form of woundedness, what was done to you leaves a gash in your heart that needs attention. The second kind of wound is much harder to detect at times. This is the wound of lack. For most people, it lurks underneath the surface. This type of wound involves the experiences you should have had, but didn’t. It involves an aspect in life where somebody should have loved you, but didn’t. They either didn’t have it to give or they were so focused on themselves, they left you in an unloving situation.
