What 86,000 Church Father Citations Reveal About the New Testament Text: Dr. Robinson Explains

In this segment, Dr. Maurice Robinson addresses the objection that the Byzantine text cannot be found in the writings of the early Church Fathers prior to the fourth century. Drawing from John Burgon’s monumental work cataloging more than 86,000 patristic citations, Dr. Robinson explains why the evidence is not as one-sided as critics suggest. While no Father used a 100% Byzantine text before the fourth century, Burgon noted that roughly three out of five quotations in the pre-Constantinian period line up with Byzantine readings. After the legalization of Christianity, as manuscripts became more widely available, the Fathers increasingly reflected a predominantly Byzantine form of the text. Dr. Robinson also points out the challenges of using patristic evidence: quotations are often from memory, paraphrased, or selectively altered for rhetorical purposes. Still, when viewed collectively, the Church Fathers provide significant support for the stability and wide circulation of Byzantine readings long before the 9th century.
