Lyrics
From Oxford’s halls to Cambridge flame,
A mind on fire, a holy aim.
He saw the people bound in night,
No Word of God, no guiding light.
Latin chained the sacred scrolls,Priests thought they controlled the hearts and souls.
Tyndale rose with steadfast hand,“To bring the Word in the tongue of the land.”
He swore to a priest, “If God gives me years,The ploughboy will know scripture better than your peers
”Not wealth, not throne, not earthly applause,But Christ alone, His gospel cause.
I defy the pope and his manmade laws!
God’s Word eternal, His truth is the cause.
No fire, no sword, no chains can bind,
The Word of the Lord will free mankind!
In Germany’s refuge, with ink and with tears,
He labored through dangers, through shadows and fears.
A smuggler of Scripture, by candle he wrote,
Each page was a weapon, each word was a note.
The bishops grew furious, the printers were slain,
But the gospel kept moving, it could not be chained.
From merchant to sailor, from the farm to the street,
The voice of God’s Word found a place in their beat.
Yet traitors betrayed him, his friends turned to foes,
In Brussels they bound him, his days at a close.
But even in chains, his courage held tall,
For truth is eternal, it conquers them all.
I defy the pope and his manmade laws!
God’s Word eternal, His truth is the cause.
No fire, no sword, no chains can bind,
The Word of the Lord will free mankind!
The stake was prepared, the crowd pressed near,
The smoke rose thick, the end was clear.
Yet through the flame, his last cry rang:
“Lord, open the eyes of England’s king!”
The ropes pulled tight, the breath grew thin,
But heaven still thundered: truth will win.
Though ashes fell, the prayer took wing,
“Lord, open the eyes of England’s king!”
And God was faithful, the prayer was heard
The king gave license to print God’s Word.
The Bible in English, the nation transformed,
A fire of truth through the kingdom stormed.
The martyr had died, but the cause was alive,
The Word was unchained, it could not be denied.
Tyndale’s blood in the soil still cries,
“God’s Word forever, His truth never dies.”
I defy the pope and his manmade laws!
God’s Word eternal, His truth is the cause.
No stake, no flame, no grave can bind,
The Word of the Lord will outlive time!
Chains are broken, the gospel sings,
The prayer fulfilled by the King of kings.
Though Tyndale fell, the truth took wing,
“Lord, open the eyes of England’s king!”
