Lyrics
Adoniram Judson
A preacher's son from Malden who buried his faith
Till a stranger died in the room beside his
And the man who died
Was the friend who first taught him doubt
He would never be the same
In the cold of eighteen-twelve they sailed
He and Ann, with no road back home
Bringing the Gospel to Burma
Six years of his life, and it gave back stone
He buried his words in unanswering ground
The sky hung shut like iron above
Then one man knelt. Maung Nau
The first convert before the mission grew
As bright, he said, as the promises of God
Though it bury me here where the light has died
Though it cost me the years, though it cost me the blood
The grave won't keep what the Lord wants alive
As bright as the promises of God
Then the war came down, and prison came
Five pairs of fetters, the death-house heat
He was hung up high in the rot and the dark
Men dying in chains at his feet
The only Scripture in the Burmese tongue
Lay sewn in a pillow gone black with grime
Ann smuggled the Book through a killing land
And she hid it one more time
As bright, he said, as the promises of God
Though it bury me here where the light has died
Though it cost me the years, though it cost me the blood
The grave won't keep what the Lord wants alive
As bright as the promises of God
Ann went down into the ground. As did their child
He dug a grave, and sat at the edge of it
And made his home among the dead
The God who gives had taken it all away
But he rose. And he finished the Word
He put the whole of Scripture in their hands
Then they sank him in the sea in eighteen-fifty
And the seed he buried broke up through the land
As bright as the promises of God
Brighter now than the death he died
The buried Word came up like dawn
And a people woke on the other side
As bright as the promises of God
But the fire didn't die in the deep with him
It crossed the water. It went south
To the black islands, to the cooking-fires
Where the cannibals waited on the shore
