Have you wondered why the doctrine of inspiration is so crucial? And what drove the Reformer, Martin Luther, to convictionally exclaim, "My conscience is subject to the Word of God." It is because of the problem of authority that the Christian Church perpetually faces. Christianity is built on truth. Men come to faith by receiving God's Word of truth about the historical Jesus who died to save sinners. As J.I. Packer put it, "We learn the mind of God by consulting His written Word, so that what Scripture says, God says. The Bible is inspired in the sense of being word-for-word God-given (or what Evangelicals call verbal, plenary inspiration). It is a record and explanation of divine revelation which is both complete (sufficient) and comprehensible (perspicuous); that is to say, it contains all that the Church needs to know in this world for its guidance in the way of salvation and service, and it contains the principles for its own interpretation within itself."
