Anna

Anna was the daughter of Phanuel and lived as a widow in Jerusalem. After seven years of married life, her husband died, leaving her to spend her long widowhood in devoted service at the temple. Unlike many widows of her era, she had the means and commitment to attend the daily temple services, indicating both her spiritual dedication and her family's standing in Jerusalem society.

When Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the temple for his presentation according to the law of Moses, Anna entered the temple at the precise moment when Simeon, another devout elder, was offering his famous blessing. Recognizing the child as the long-awaited Messiah, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem (Luke 2:38). Her testimony as a recognized prophetess carried significant spiritual authority in the community.

Anna belonged to a lineage of female prophets in Israel, including *Miriam* (Exodus 15:20), *Deborah* (Judges 4:4), and *Huldah* (2 Chronicles 34:22). These women served as recognized spiritual leaders who communicated God's will to the people. Like her predecessors, Anna's prophetic gift gave her credibility to announce the significance of Jesus's arrival to the waiting faithful community.
