📖 Does God choose who gets saved — or does every person have a choice? Romans 9 tackles one of the most debated questions in all of Scripture, and the answer is more balanced than most people realize.
✝️ Continuing verse-by-verse through Romans 9, this study picks up at verse 8 and moves through verses 9-11, examining the doctrine of election and the sovereignty of God. We begin in Genesis 21:9-12, where God tells Abraham that the singular seed — the coming Christ — would come through Isaac, not Ishmael. Then Romans 9:9 confirms: "At this time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son." From there we move to Romans 9:10-11, where Rebekah's twins — Esau and Jacob — are still in the womb, and God declares the elder shall serve the younger, not based on works, but on His sovereign purpose. Along the way, we cross-reference John 1:7-9, Titus 2:11, and Romans 1:18-20 to show that God's grace has appeared to all men and that every person is without excuse. The lesson closes with a powerful analogy of ten men on death row — and why God's sovereign election never cancels the open invitation of the gospel.
