The Dead Sea Scrolls are among the most important archaeological discoveries ever made for understanding the Bible. These ancient manuscripts, copied centuries before the time of Jesus, preserve large portions of the Old Testament—including books that Jesus Himself quoted. When scholars compare the Dead Sea Scrolls with later Hebrew manuscripts, they find an extraordinary degree of preservation. While there are textual variants, the overall message of the Old Testament has been transmitted with remarkable consistency across the centuries. This is one reason the Dead Sea Scrolls are so significant to both historians and biblical scholars. Archaeology can help us understand the historical reliability and preservation of the biblical text, but it cannot answer the most important question.
