You've probably heard the word codex, but what exactly is it? Before books looked the way they do today, many ancient writings were kept on scrolls. A codex was a different format—pages bound together along one edge, much like a modern book. This may sound like a small detail, but it was revolutionary. The codex made it much easier to organize, preserve, copy, and quickly reference long texts. That's one reason early Christians adopted the codex so widely for preserving and sharing the Scriptures.
