What does it mean to be sealed by the Holy Spirit? In this verse-by-verse study of 2 Corinthians 1:15–2:8, discover the truth that every believer is sealed and given the Holy Spirit as a down payment of their inheritance in Christ.
This study picks up in 2 Corinthians 1:15, where Paul defends his sincerity after changing his travel plans. He declares that all the promises of God in Christ are "yea and amen" (2 Corinthians 1:20). Moving to verses 21-22, Paul reveals that God has sealed us and given us the earnest — the down payment — of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. Les cross-references Ephesians 1:13-14 to show the Spirit is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession. The study then explores Paul's decision to spare the Corinthians by writing instead of visiting, and his heart of love despite their failures. Finally, Les addresses the man living in gross immorality with his father's wife (1 Corinthians 5), the church's responsibility to deal with sin, and the command to forgive and restore — confirmed by Galatians 6:1.
