And it is more confrontational than most worship leaders are prepared for. When did you last leave the presence of God changed? Not moved. Not inspired. Not emotionally stirred by a song you were rehearsing. Changed. The kind of changed that happens when the Word of God gets into a place you were protecting. The kind of changed that happens when prayer goes somewhere real instead of cycling through familiar words. The kind of changed that leaves a mark. Because that mark is what you are supposed to be carrying into the room when you lead. Not a polished performance. Not a carefully constructed atmosphere. The evidence of someone who has genuinely been with God. And you cannot manufacture that evidence. You cannot create it in a green room or assemble it during soundcheck. It is built in the secret place, over time, through the Word and through prayer that costs you something. The challenge for most worship leaders is not that they do not want to be people of the Word. It is that the system they are operating in does not reward the Word. It rewards output. It rewards consistency. It rewards the ability to deliver regardless of what is happening internally. And so over time, internal preparation gets quietly deprioritised in favour of external performance. And nobody notices because the service still runs well. But God notices.
