Caiaphas Prophesies: “It Is Better That One Man Die for the People”

After Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, many Jews who had seen the miracle began to believe in Him. But some went to the Pharisees and reported what Jesus had done. The chief priests and Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin in panic: “What are we going to do? This man is performing many signs. If we leave Him alone, all will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our land and our nation.” Then Caiaphas, the high priest that year, said: “You know nothing, nor do you consider that it is better for you that one man should die instead of the people, so that the whole nation may not perish.” He did not say this on his own. As high priest, he unknowingly prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation — and not only for the nation, but to gather into one the dispersed children of God. From that day on, they plotted to kill Jesus. So Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews but withdrew to the region near the desert, to a town called Ephraim. As the Passover drew near, many went up to Jerusalem to purify themselves and wondered: “What do you think? That He will not come to the feast?” This critical passage from John 11:45-56 shows how the raising of Lazarus became the final trigger for the religious leaders’ decision to put Jesus to death — and how God sovereignly used even their evil plans for His redemptive purpose. 🙏 A powerful reflection on God’s providence and the cost of following Jesus.
