Can anything — tribulation, persecution, death, or even Satan himself — separate you from the love of Christ? Romans 8:33-39 gives the most powerful answer in all of Scripture.
✝️ Picking up in Romans 8:32, this verse-by-verse study builds on the finished work of the cross as the foundation of every promise God makes to believers. Romans 8:33 introduces the doctrine of election — "God's elect" — and explains what it means that God is the one who justifies. Romans 8:34 hammers the resurrection: Christ died, rose again, and now intercedes at the right hand of God. Then comes Romans 8:35 — the list of things that cannot separate us: tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, sword. The word "tribulation" is traced through Revelation 2:9-10 (the letter to Smyrna) to show that God's choicest believers have always suffered — and yet were never separated. Romans 8:36 quotes Psalm 44, "we are counted as sheep for the slaughter," and Les shares a vivid illustration from the Chicago stockyards. Romans 8:37 declares we are "more than conquerors." And Romans 8:38-39 closes with Paul's great persuasion: neither death nor life, angels, principalities, powers, nor anything in creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
