A common criticism is that religion exists primarily to extract money, power, or obedience from people. But according to the New Testament, the purpose of the church is very different. The church is called to worship God, care for those in need, support the spread of the gospel, and serve its community. Throughout the New Testament, believers are encouraged to help the poor, care for widows and orphans, support those in hardship, and bear one another's burdens. While churches can fail to live up to these ideals, the biblical standard is service—not exploitation.
