In 1947, a discovery in caves near Qumran changed biblical scholarship forever.
Inside clay jars were the Dead Sea Scrolls—ancient copies of Old Testament books, prayers, and Jewish writings that dated to before the time of Jesus.
What made this discovery so significant?
Many of these manuscripts were over 1,000 years older than the oldest Hebrew Bible manuscripts scholars had previously used.
For years, some critics argued that the biblical text had been changed dramatically over time.
The Dead Sea Scrolls gave scholars something they had never had before: much earlier copies to compare.
The result?
The biblical text was found to have been remarkably well preserved. While there are textual variations between manuscripts—as scholars have long recognized—the overall consistency of the biblical text across centuries was a major finding.
That's good news, not because a Bible fell from heaven, but because it shows how carefully these ancient writings were copied and preserved.
The Dead Sea Scrolls remain one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the twentieth century.
