Jesus Walks with Two Disciples on the Road to Emmaus

That very day, two of Jesus’ disciples were going to Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. While they were discussing everything that had happened, Jesus Himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him. They told Him about the crucifixion and how the women found the tomb empty. Jesus said, “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke!” Then, beginning with Moses and all the prophets, He interpreted to them what referred to Him in all the Scriptures. When they reached the village, they urged Him, “Stay with us.” As He sat at table with them, He took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them. Their eyes were opened and they recognized Him — but He vanished from their sight. They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” They immediately returned to Jerusalem and told the others how Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
