Does the Bible really say every government is ordained by God — even wicked ones? Romans 13 answers this and more, covering Christian rights, taxes, love as the fulfillment of the Law, and end-time urgency.
Continuing from Romans 12, this study moves through Romans 12:17-21 and into Romans 13 and 14. Romans 12:18 is unpacked as a "loophole" — believers are to live peaceably with all men if it be possible, but are not required to be doormats. Paul's own example in Acts 23 — firing back at the high priest Ananias and calling him a "whited wall" — and his assertion of Roman citizenship rights in Philippi show that Christians can and should exert their legal rights when necessary. Romans 13:1 establishes that every governing power is ordained by God — even Hitler, even unpopular presidents — because God is sovereign over all human history. Romans 13:6-7 addresses taxes as a God-ordained obligation. Romans 13:8-9 teaches that love fulfills the Law — not committing adultery, not killing, not coveting — because love for God and neighbor keeps the believer within God's guidelines. Romans 6:14 is revisited: we are not under Law but under Grace — yet Grace is not license. Romans 13:11-14 sounds the end-time alarm: it is high time to awake out of sleep, cast off darkness, and put on the Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 14 introduces disputes between believers — specifically eating meat offered to idols — and Paul's firm command: do not judge another man's servant.
