Rev 14:14-20... The Harvest

The Harvest This entire chapter draws its imagery from the rhythm of the yearly harvest, a cycle deeply familiar to Israel. The harvest always began with the firstfruits—the very first portion of grain, grapes, or produce gathered from the field. These were not merely agricultural products; they were consecrated offerings, set apart as holy to the Lord. The firstfruits represented both the promise of the full harvest yet to come and the acknowledgment that all provision ultimately belonged to God. John echoes this ancient pattern when he describes the faithful as those who “were purchased from among mankind and offered as firstfruits to God and the Lamb” (Revelation 14:4b). The “firstfruits” were a representative sample of the whole harvest. It was a picture of what was to come from the rest of the harvest. Within that framework, it is easy to see how Israel fits that description. God’s setting aside of Israel is a picture of what was to come from the rest of the harvest, i.e., the Church. After the firstfruits came the rest of the harvest. That which was acceptable was kept (the Church), and at the end of the season, that which was unacceptable or spoiled, the blemished grain, the diseased produce, or the worthless chaff, was discarded or destroyed.
