Lloyd begins his series on Shariah law (an umbrella term which refers to four distinct schools of law, better known as 'Madhab', or ways of acting, which are the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi, and the Hanbali schools of 'Fiqh', which means 'understanding') by warning us that there are many sources for Islamic law, and many scholars (known as a 'Faqih') who claim to be experts in the law, but most are simply specialists in just one or two areas of Shariah.
Each of the four schools of Fiqh has its own sources of books, and took on the name of the creator for the schools, who lived primarily in the north:
The Hanafi, the largest of the 4 schools comes from Kufa, Iraq and their text is called al-Fiqh al akbar, though the followers today rely more on the Hedaya manual written in 1870 in India.
The Maliki school comes from Medina their text of jurisprudence is know as the al-Muwatta.
The Shafi school of jurisprudence was created in Baghdad by Shafe, who wrote the al-Risala, though his followers today use the 'Reliance of the Traveller' for their authority.
The Hanbal school comes from Iraq and Hanbal is credited with the Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal.
Lloyd shows the importance of Shariah by pointing to the punishment of the public amputation of a hand of a thief, which is supported in only one verse in the Qur'an (Surah 5:38), so is often dismissed as unimportant by many Muslims today.
Yet, when you look at the Hanafi manual of jurisprudence, known as the Hedaya, in book 7, chapter 2 and pgs. 82-126, there are a full 44 pages dedicated to the amputation of the hands of thieves.
This proves just how important Shariah law is, yet Muslims are not aware of these laws, nor are they aware of where and when these laws were created and written down, nor where they are derived from.
It is for that reason that Lloyd plans to unpack these questions for us in upcoming videos, so stay tuned...
