Why the Rich Young Ruler Is a Problem for Calvinism

If God decrees everything—including who believes and who doesn't—then why does Jesus explicitly warn that wealth makes faith harder? The Rich Young Ruler walked away from Jesus, not because God decreed his unbelief, but because his wealth had hardened his heart. That story creates a massive problem for Calvinist determinism. In this video, I break down why the Calvinist explanation that "God ordains the ends and the means" falls apart when you apply it to the biblical text. If spiritual blindness, pride, and the love of money are all decreed by God, then the Rich Young Ruler was doing exactly what God determined him to do—and yet Jesus held him responsible. That's not a mystery. That's a contradiction. We'll look at what Scripture actually says about wealth and faith, why the Rich Young Ruler's story makes more sense under a provisionist framework, and what this means for how we understand God's sovereignty and human responsibility.
