📖 Did God really harden Pharaoh's heart — or did Pharaoh harden his own? Romans 9:18 is one of the most debated verses in Scripture, and the answer changes everything about how you understand God's sovereignty and grace.
✝️ Continuing verse-by-verse through Romans 9, this study picks up at verse 18 and moves through verse 24, covering some of the most challenging passages in all of Paul's writings. We begin with Romans 9:18 — "He hath mercy on whom He will, and whom He will He hardeneth" — and Les explains that the word "hardeneth" in Scripture is the same Hebrew word translated "heavy," meaning the more Pharaoh resisted God, the more the weight of God's wrath pressed down on him. From there we move to Romans 9:19-21 and the potter and clay illustration, cross-referencing Jeremiah 18:1-6 where God tells Jeremiah to go to the potter's house and watch the potter reshape a marred vessel. Then we turn to Ephesians 1:11 — predestinated according to the purpose of Him who worketh all things after the counsel of His will — and II Timothy 1:7-9, where Paul declares we were called with a holy calling not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace given in Christ Jesus before the world began. The lesson closes at Romans 9:23-24 — vessels of mercy prepared unto glory — and moves into Acts 22 and Isaiah 42 and 49 to show that God's plan to reach the Gentiles was foretold in the Old Testament all along.
